Answers for the Triangles strategy game

This FAQ is the long-form reference for trianglegame.app: the free browser version of Triangles, the dot-connecting strategy game. It covers how to start, how a triangle is claimed, how the computer opponent plays at each difficulty, and why progress lives on your device.

For a full walkthrough of the rules, read how to play Triangles. For strategy, see the tips page. To play now, open the board.

Getting started

What Triangles is, whether it is free, and how to start a match in your browser.

What is Triangles?

Triangles is a two-player strategy game played on a scatter of points. Players take turns drawing a straight line between two points; a line that closes a triangle — three points all connected to each other — is claimed by whoever drew it, and that player takes another turn. The match ends when no legal line remains, and whoever has claimed the most triangles wins.

Is Triangles free to play online?

Yes. trianglegame.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls.

Do I need to download an app or create an account?

No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.

Rules and scoring

Legal lines, how a triangle is claimed, the extra-turn rule, and how the match ends.

How do you play Triangles?

On your turn, draw a line between any two points that are not yet connected, as long as the line does not cross an existing line and does not pass through a third point. If your line completes one or more triangles, you claim them and go again; if it completes nothing, play passes to the other side. Keep going until no legal line remains, then compare triangle counts.

What makes a line illegal?

Three things: the two points are already connected, the line would cross another line already on the board, or the line would pass through a third point on its way between the two you chose. Any of those makes the move illegal, regardless of how far apart the two points are.

How does the extra-turn rule work?

Completing at least one triangle with your line keeps the turn with you, so you draw again immediately. If that next line also completes a triangle, you go again, and so on — a strong move can chain through several captures in one turn. The turn only passes to your opponent after a line that completes nothing.

Can I play against a friend instead of the computer?

Yes. Switch to the "Vs. a friend" mode before starting a match and pass the device back and forth — Player 1 and Player 2 alternate turns on the same board exactly as against the computer.

What are the controls?

Drag from one point to another to draw a line, or tap a point to select it and tap a second point to connect. On the keyboard, Tab cycles through points, Enter connects the selected pair, Escape clears a selection, N deals a new board, and M toggles sound.

Can one line complete more than one triangle?

Yes. If the two points you connect each already share a third connected point with the other, closing that line can complete multiple three-point triangles at once, and you claim every one of them plus the extra turn that comes with any capture.

Winning and the computer opponent

How the difficulty levels play, and how to give yourself the best chance of winning.

How does the computer opponent play?

On Easy, the computer mostly plays loosely and does not always take an available triangle. On Normal, it always takes a free triangle when one is on offer and avoids obvious sacrifices when it can. On Hard, it also looks one move ahead to pick the biggest available capture chain and, when forced to sacrifice, gives away as little as possible.

How do I win more matches?

Always take a triangle that is free right now. Before drawing any other line, check whether it leaves two sides of some triangle in place for your opponent to finish next. Late in a match, count how many safe lines remain — whoever runs out first has to sacrifice, so force your opponent into that position rather than yourself.

Why did the computer give me a triangle for free?

On Normal and Hard, the computer avoids drawing a line that would leave two sides of a triangle in place whenever a genuinely safe line exists. When every remaining line is unsafe, it is forced to sacrifice something — Hard picks the sacrifice that gives away the least, but it cannot avoid giving something away entirely once safe lines run out.

Is every match winnable against the computer?

Not against Hard, which plays close to the best available line every turn. Easy and Normal are beatable with the habits on the tips page — take free triangles immediately, avoid setting up your opponent, and track the safe-line count as the board fills in.

Devices, saving, and accounts

Mobile play, supported browsers, local progress, and pass-and-play with a friend.

Does the game save my progress?

Wins, losses, draws, longest win streak, and best winning margin are saved locally in your browser, tracked separately for each computer difficulty and for pass-and-play. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. A match in progress is not saved if you close the tab.

Can I play Triangles on mobile?

Yes. The board and both scores fit on one portrait screen. Drag a line with your finger, or tap one point and then a second to connect them, and dealing a new board is instant with no page reload.

Why did my win streak reset?

The current streak counts consecutive Player 1 wins in one mode — a given computer difficulty, or pass-and-play. Starting a new board before finishing the current one, or losing a match, resets that mode’s current streak to zero. Your longest streak is kept as a separate best.

How do I reset my stats?

Open Stats from the game panel and choose Reset progress, then confirm with a second tap. That clears wins, losses, draws, best margin, and streaks for every mode on this browser. It cannot be undone.

Which browsers are supported?

Any current browser with JavaScript: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, plus their mobile versions. If lines do not respond, update the browser, allow scripts for this site, and reload.

Still have a question?

Rules not listed here follow standard Triangles: draw a legal line, claim a triangle the moment it closes, take an extra turn on any capture, and count triangles once no legal line remains. For who publishes the game or a bug report, use About Us. Legal details are on Privacy and Terms.
